As a past pharmacist I find it somewhat comical that I have so much passion for integrating alternative medicine into my health regime and that I am an avid proponent for others to do the same. I became aware of the benefits about 4 years ago after experiencing a life filled with anxiety and depressing behavior. After trying antidepressants I realized they were a temporary solution with unpleasant side effects. I was resigned to taking them short term but I was determined to get to the “root” of the issue.
May I be clear … if I present to the ER with major trauma, bring on the trauma team! It is all about finding a healthy balance and the correct practitioner to replenish your mind, body, and spirit and subsequently your health to live your life to the fullest. The major awareness that made alternative medicine appealing for me was based on the belief that we are all energetic beings, and therefore healing must take place at the root cause or cellular level in order to really have complete health. Check out the book The Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton, PHD or Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss for more insight.
Deeper healing
Traditional medicine is typically symptom based, and therefore treatment usually eliminates the symptoms. Great if you have a broken leg, not so great if you are anxious or have an addiction and haven’t gotten to the root of the emotional issue. Consider that the dis-ease has started long before the symptoms appear and the “pain” you are experiencing is your body and mind’s way of getting your attention to deal with the issues, past or present, that are causing the discomfort. Many alternative modalities deal with releasing the blockages causing the pain.
Individualized treatment
Each of us is different, and therefore our treatment needs to be specific for each one of us. There are many ways to achieve the same outcome and it is up to each individual to feel what resonates and feels comfortable for him or her. One size does not fit all.
Holistic approach
If each of us is created with a mind, a body and a spirit how could I possibly be healthy if I ignore my spirituality? Many alternative health care providers are intuitive and will provide spiritual guidance in conjunction with their practice of choice if you are open and willing to accept it. They are facilitating treatment of the “whole” person.
Heals chronic or untreatable diseases
I have faith that many illnesses that are being treated today can be lessened in severity, if not healed completely, if the individuals are willing to commit themselves to healing using alternative medicine in conjunction with their traditional therapies.
