Like others who are starting out on their transition journey, I spent the last couple of weeks thinking, wondering and wallowing. Sound productive? Not so much. Instead of soaking in the wallow pool, I decided to look for inspiration from my friends on this She Taxi transition journey, Sherry and Jeanne. Here’s the wisdom I found in their comments.
Unplanned detours
Curve Ahead. Road Closed. Wrong Way. All are signs we have seen on our various trips around town. Most of the time we don’t plan for those route changes, so we become anxious and are sometimes late for our next appointment. Darn that road construction! As much as it makes us mad, road construction in the summer in Minnesota is inevitable, and yes, out of our control.
No matter how hard we try, we can’t predict or control the road construction of life (aka transitions). What if instead we decide to embrace the detours? Isn’t it those side trips, those curves, those bumps that really help us figure out who we are and what’s important to us?
Explore and discover
Detours often take us places we would have never explored or discovered if we took our original route. It’s those detours off the well-beaten path that give us the opportunity to rethink where we are going and how we want to get there. Knowing that, I am now ready to throw away my old map and really embrace the fact my route has changed.
No more wallowing….Instead, buckle up friends. I’m not quite sure where we are going, but I know there will be bumps and curves and maybe even some bruises. Most importantly, I know it will be an adventure. Like Sherry said, the pain of change is inevitable but we don’t have to go it alone. Hop in!

I’m buckled in and ready for the ride!
My favorite road sign?? U turn!! Sometimes it takes a “U turn”–a turn back to YOU to get headed in the right direction again. How many times have we NOT put ourselves first or thought about what “U” want before you begin on your journey? Like they say on the airplane–you have to put your own oxygen mask on first before “U” can help anyone else.
Let’s remind each other that U turns are okay! Gotta believe that the reason they have them on roads is because everyone needs one once in awhile!
